Gilbert Lake Association Stories from 2023
November 28, 2023: Gilbert Lake was officially frozen over with a 5 degree temperature at the 7:50 am sunrise, as seen from the public access. Trumpeter Swans were on ice surveying the situation before flying south.
November 25, 2023: There was ice along the north shore of Gilbert Two. Thanks for the photo from the Karen Hietpas.
May 23, 2023: I fished the channel for panfish two weeks apart and enjoyed. On the first night, a red fishing boat drove extremely fast and on a morning a black speedboat was doing the same.
During these times on the first occasion there were approximately six boats when the red boat went through causing a large wake. The black ski boat was creating the large wake until he saw us in the middle of the channel heading to the dock. He then slowed down however the large wakes were already hitting the shore.
During the spawning time there are large numbers of fish nests in the channel. During spawning and general boating excursions there is shoreline damage overtime.
A suggestion is to create a no wake zone in the channel by the public landing to protect both concerns.
Respectfully,
Brian

June 6, 2023: Lake Association members Mark Persons and Jerry Sinner took on the project of renovating the sign board at the public access. It was tilting toward the pavement and the shingles were falling off or gathering moss. Jerry was on a ladder removing shingles while ground crew Mark was the gofer. Jerry donated new roofing material and installed it. Then they dug around the posts to put the signboard back standing straight. They tamped the ground down to hopefully keep the sign in position. The project took about three hours.
Does anyone want to paint it? Contact Mark Persons [email protected].
May 30, 2023: Gilbert Lake Three, the environmental lake. Association President Colin Reported he, Mark Skinner and Charlie Campbell were able to add a couple more anchors and ropes to the ones that were present and tidy up the other ropes and knots. Then a storm rolled in so they had to get out of there. Hopefully the repair is good for the year or years to come! He will check on it again in July.
May 16, 2023: The Gilbert Lake Association annual meeting was well attended at the Brainerd VFW. Annual association membership dues were paid. The meeting was run by Association President Colin Ryan.
The water level is 1175.5 feet above mean sea level. This is the same as 2014 and is 2.8 feet below average. The recorded high was 179.8 feet in 2020. More on the Facts page, when the DNR makes the statistics available.
Volunteers will be needed to help move a bog at Gilbert Three on or about May 30th. Stay tuned for details.

Jerry Sinner told the group of an article that appeared in the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine urging everyone to stay 150 or more feet from shore when creating large wakes.
April 29, 2023: Photos below are from the public landing. It looks like Gilbert Two is ice free, but there is still ice on the east shore.
April 28, 2023: Gilbert Lake Two is open at the public landing, but most of the lake still has ice.

April 7, 2023, no recent car or truck tracks. Only people and dogs walking on the lake.
February 2, 2023: Ground Hog Day. Nipper the dog was out on the lake to check the weather on this important day. Just like Punxsutawney Phil at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he saw his shadow. Nipper is seen here explaining to his offspring that the shadow means six more weeks of winter! The plan is to stay warm while the weather slowly gets better.
