Gilbert Lake Association
Stories from 2025

December 30, 2025: The Crow Wing County Board met to decide on allowing commercial rezoning of residential property so a gas station could be built at the intersections of Wise Road, CR 3 and Riverside drives. There was much local opposition, mostly because of the environmental impact on Gilbert Lake.

In the end, the Crow Wing County Board unanimously rejected the rezoning proposal by a 5 to 0 vote. There is a chance the proponent will come back with another plan in the future. Meanwhile, it was suggested to make the land green space. A roundabout is planned there in the future.

December 23, 2025: Collin’s Towing of St Cloud extracted a truck from beneath the ice on Gilbert Lake. Thanks to Mark Ambroz for the video.

December 5, 2025, 1:45 pm: Gilbert Two is frozen over.  Thanks to Karen Hietpas for the video.

December 3, 2025, 9:43 am: Gilbert had some open water, as seen from the Karen Hietpas place on the north side of Gilbert Two. It won't likely stay open when temperatures drop to 9 below zero overnight.

December 1, 2025: Gilbert Two almost frozen over, as seen at 10:30 am on December 1st. Gilbert One, the southwest part of the lake, froze on November 28th. How long will it be before fishermen show up?

April 11, 2025: If 90% is the criteria for an ice-free lake, then it appears we are there. About 10% of Gilbert Two (the big lake) has ice on its east shore where it is shadowed by trees. For perspective, the earliest recorded ice out was on March 27, 2016. The latest was April 29, 2023.
